Douglas’s Answer

Hi Floyd,

Automobile Manufacturing is such a broad field it is tough for me to make any real specific recommendations since there are so many places that a Mechanical Engineer could fit into the manufacture of automobiles. Since you are asking about automobile manufacturing, are there any specific phases of auto manufacturing or automobiles in general that you like: engines, body assembly, suspensions, etc. I suggest that you search the web sites of the auto manufacturers to see what kind of jobs they are advertising for. That should give you a good idea or what they are looking for and what areas you might focus on. In general, I suggest that you do the very best you can in your mechanical engineering classes (marks do count) and participate in automotive related clubs or activities if any are offered in your school. If not, a hobby in the automotive field might prove to be interesting to a future employer and it might help you to focus on an area that you find interesting.
