I am a 10th Grader who is interested in becoming an Interior Designer and I was wondering what steps I would need to take in order to Kickstart that path.

I really enjoy designing and decorating in anyway, whether it be through a computer or a room. I just want to know if there's anything I need to know about Interior Design before going more in depth with this Career pathway. #interiordesign

Pam’s Answer

If possible, shadow one or more designer in your area on a day you have off school. This will allow you to see the variety of work interior designers do and give you a better idea on how you would like this career. Take art classes while you are still in high school, particularly in freehand drawing. Even though CAD is used everyday now for architects and interior designers, they still benefit greatly from having hand drawing skills to quick sketch ideas with each other or for a client.

It is great that you are investigating the design world. Use online resources (Blogs, TED talks, etc) to gain knowledge of all aspects of design including building design, interior design, product design, and fabrication. If possible, visit museums, see the artwork and also investigate their exhibits on furniture and design. As Pam stated, I encourage you to “shadow” interior designers, architects, fabricators, and other designers to see what all of these careers entail.

If you know you want to be a designer, in any capacity, I'd encourage you to start your portfolio as soon as possible. A portfolio is a collection of examples of your original art and design work. The best portfolios show passion and excitement. Try to work on something for your portfolio for at least 30 minutes, three times a week. Look at the built environment and the natural environment. Record what you see with hand-drawn sketches, computer graphic work, paintings, photographs, collages, anything that shows your creativity. Your portfolio should be online and show images of anything that you've designed and/or created.

Best of luck to you in your career path.
