Great questions and I agree 100% with Nija's answer. In addition to the degree, you can also pursue certifications in specific programming languages (HTML, HTML5, Java, etc.).

Definitely hands on learning is long term the best, but a general degree or figure out what type of development you want to do and focus.  Learning the different languages and platforms is important.

I personally would recommend a bachelor degree in computer science, or computer engineering. Those two would make it far easier to get a job at this current time . You can also find a position through taking code schools, but some companies still require a bachelor's degree to be considered.

I personally hold a bachelor degree in electrical engineering, and it was a bit harder for me to enter the field due to some basic knowledge I missed due to not taking computer science classes.
