Remember that different areas in our country are more or less expensive to live in, and salaries for many jobs (including nursing) tend to reflect these differences. So, just as it is more expensive to live in New York City than it is to live in Indianapolis (e.g. cost of rent), nurses in NYC may make more money than those in Indianapolis do for an equivalent position. You can look at different charts and tables of cost of living at the US Census bureau website (www.census.gov).

It is important to note that some states are thinking about getting rid of the LPN position described above, so it would be wise to check with your state's Board of Nursing before going to school to be an LPN to make sure that the LPN position is still available. The RN and APN positions are safe. (Nurses are licensed to practice in a state, not the entire country. You get licensed to practice nursing by taking a licensing exam in a state. If you move, you have to apply to the state Board of Nursing of the new state to get licensed to practice nursing there. Usually you do not have to take a test again as long as you have a valid license in your original state).

Hi Tashina,

The amount of money a nurse makes depends on the type of nurse. There are:

1) Licensed Practical Nurses also called Licensed Vocational Nurses. Most only have a year of education that covers the basic nursing skills required for essential patient care. These nurses care for patients in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, private homes, and group homes. They may work under the supervision of a registered nurse.Their average salary in 2010 was $41,360 (according to Bureau of Labor Statistics)

2) Most nurses are Registered Nurses. Registered Nurse certifications are the industry-standard and preferred in most hospitals. RNs have the most flexibility in regards to career opportunities, but they specialize in a type of care, such as critical care, trauma nursing, oncology, respiratory/pulmonary care, pain management, or psychiatry/mental health, among dozens of others most directly relative to particular departments. The average wage in 2010 for a Registered Nurse (also called RN) was $67,720 (Bureau of Labor Statistics). The average in 2010 for Registered Nurses working in hospitals (as opposed to office of physicians, nursing homes), including in Emergency Rooms, was $68,610.

3) There are also RNs that get a Master’s degrees in Nursing, they are called Advanced Practice Nurses. They specialize and have jobs such as Nurse Anesthetists, Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Midwives, and Clinical Nurse Specialists. Their average wage is typically over $90,000 per year. But remember, that they are also in school for longer periods of time.
