As the previous poster said, there are a number of benefits to culinary school, especially if you are starting out in the field. Frequently the schools teach a wider variety of classes than just techniques. Food industry workers need to be aware of health and safety issues, of course, but if you are considering starting your own restaurant, you will also benefit from taking classes in business management, kitchen management, hospitality, etc. Being a great chef doesn't help if you can't balance the books or hire and manage an effective team!

Good question, it really depends on what you want to do and how much time you have spent cooking already. If you want to be a chef and create dishes, and do not have years of experience creating on your own, then you should go the culinary school route. If you already understand the basics, are comfortable with your palette, and believe you can create dishes that people want to eat then find a place that will let you flourish!

I think there is a lot of benefit in culinary school because you will gain exposure to new foods, techniques, and roles which can help you discover your passion.
