Douglas’s Answer

Hi,

I think you need to be a bit more specific, there are many types of mechanics from automotive mechanics (cars and trucks) to industrial mechanics (machinery). But, in general a mechanic would basically either solve a problem with a piece of equipment or receive the solution to a problem from others and then work, with his or her hands, using the appropriate tools to implement the necessary correction or other scope of work to the subject piece of equipment.

I would suggest that you research the field of mechanics w/r to the various industries that employ mechanics to see if there is a particular industry or type of equipment that interests you and then dig into what those mechanics do in detail. What a mechanic (sometimes called a millwright) installing a conveyor system does as opposed to what an automotive mechanic does would be quite different.

Hope this helps.

Charles’s Answer

I took automotive repair for 3 1/2 years in high school. Although I am not a career mechanic, I have had may classic cars and have enjoyed the satisfaction of restoring and repairing automobiles. It can be a greasy job but there are many skills involved, Electrical can be very involved, the mechanical areas are my favorite. Some people are experts at body work - I am not one of those but I can appreciate a car with good body work done to it. It is an area that can start as a hobby and become a career. For me it has just become a life time hobby.

Dealer mechanics make great money and are very hard working.

Wish you the best,

Chuck B
