Robert J.’s Answer

Jose B.

Whether you travel or not; and to what extent depends on your position in the health system you select for employment. Many positions will not require much travel at all. You will be expected to simply show up and do your job.

Specifically, inpatient positions at medical facilities will have regular shifts that you will be expected work. Outpatient facilities may be similar in that you will be expected to report to designated shift. When you interview for positions be sure to ask what is expected of you.

On the other hand, some medical industry positions will require extensive travel. The travel requirements in these positions will likely be spelled out in the job announcement. Once again, be sure to ask whenever you interview so you have an idea of what you may be getting into.

As you are doing your homework on what you want to do, be sure to check the travel requirements and proceed according to what you want to do.

Robert J. recommends the following next steps:

Consult a mentor or coach and hone in on a few positions that interest you. Then do your homework on the travel requirements of those positions. Consider how those positions fit into what you believe shifts you to your best self. With a more specific picture in mind consult the network again for advice.

The answer, it depends on the field you choose! Some branches of the medical field do require travel but the classical ones where you work in a local clinic or a hospital typically don’t.

on the other hand, If you have or are pursuing a career in the medical profession but don't want to be stuck in an office, there are options available that may suit your on-the-go spirit. Some allow you to visit clients and operate independently. Others may take you to faraway lands you may never have imagined visiting.

Richard’s Answer

Physicians do not have to travel but as locum tenens providers, you could have the opportunity to travel if you want to provide temporary services at hospitals and clinics far from your home.
