Java, Ruby, Python etc are all good. You need to aim for a specific career and then chose the language. For eg. If you are planning to go to Japan where people ONLY speak Japanese, learning Russian won't help even if Russian is the most popular.

I have been in the field now for over 30 years, and have seen most of the languages above get created. :)
In my undergraduate degree, we had to take a "first programming class" (Pascal), Assembler, a 1 hour course on Fortran, and then could take one other programming course for credit (I took APL). Given all the languages at that time (yes, even back then!) we complained to our advisor that we should be allowed to take more of these classes for credit.
His response: If you know these languages, you can teach yourself a new language in a couple of weeks with a good reference book and a project to work on.
Overall, he was right.
Languages generally break down into procedural (like C, Java) or functional (like LISP/Scheme). Learn a small variety, especially if they look "completely foreign" to begin with. Enjoy!
