To work in a hospital as a nurse, you need either an Associates Degree in Nursing or a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. Some hospitals do not hire nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing; however, if you show you are enrolled in a Bachelor's program, they may hire you.

Some hospitals want nurses to have experience before applying to their hospital. If you don't have experience, some ways to get around this is applying for an externship or fellowship through the hospital. In my experience, I have seen nursing students get hired once they pass the NCLEX (nursing board exam) since they are already in the hospitals staffing system and they know the manager who works for the department they did their externship/fellowship in.

I live in New York so the rules may be different in El Paso, BUT if you know people who work at your local hospital ask them if they have any positions open for nursing students. These positions could be a nursing assistant, companion, or a volunteer. This can help you tremendously to get your foot in the door! Hope this help! Good luck!

joelle recommends the following next steps:

Go on your local hospitals website and search their job openings and see if they have jobs for nursing students
Volunteer at your local hospital to get your foot in the door
Add your local hopsital to your mailing list so you get up to date news about their job openings and job fairs

Julie’s Answer

Nursing is a wonderful career. If you are caring and compassionate it is a great place to be. Students should study well, devoting the needed attention and time to learn everything they possibly can to practice safe and effective care. Nursing work is not always easy, but outcomes are usually very rewarding.
