Suzanne’s Answer

Hi Isabelle,

Your bachelor of science degree is a generalist degree. You will be able to site for your state board license once you have completed the program. Once you pass the state board, then you can apply for jobs within your state. I highly recommend that you get a bachelor's degree which will place you in better standing to obtain a job within a hospital. Hospitals will then place you in training programs in areas where they have openings, ob/gyn being one of the specialities. Many times nurses will have to wait until an opening in OB/GYN becomes available, but you can work with the hospital nurse recruiter to help with your job placement. Hospitals will uniquely train their nurses for each specialty unit they may have. There is not a specialized degree to become on OB/Gyn nurse.
Again, what is most important to be able to work in the field of OB/Gyn is to earn your bachelor's degree.

Here is some additional information:

Suzanne recommends the following next steps:

Look for a college or university that has a nursing program with high state board pass rate
Obtain your BSN
Take your state board test
Apply for nursing positions in hospitals that have highly rated OB/GYN units
Work with the nursing recruiter in these hospitals and let them know you want to specialze

Dr. Frank’s Answer

A Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN) is a gateway into a professional registered nurse (or RN) career and a great solution to take the next step in your career if you are an RN without a BSN degree.

Although some people already work as RNs without having this degree, deciding to get it would lead to more career opportunities and higher pay.

The Basic Steps to Get Your yBSN Degree
Get your high school diploma or your GED diploma.

Apply to an Accredited BSN Program and go through the application process. ...
Apply for Financial Aid, if needed.

Attend the program and complete its requirements.
Apply for RN licensure and take the NCLEX-RN® exam.
