Ms.’s Answer

UW-Eau Claire has one of the best music programs in the state, and their Blugold Marching Band has toured all over (even played for the pope!). When I worked with Music Education majors, a majority of my students were in the band, and everyone loved it! It is a lot of time and commitment, but students enjoy the sense of community and making music together, of course. I would advise making a list of your top priorities when it comes to a college, particularly around your interest, and then researching and talking with folks from those colleges about what makes them stand out and how will they meet your needs. You have so many choices out there. Why choose them?

Ricardo’s Answer

There are a lot of schools to choose from when it comes to becoming a band major. For example school's like the Academy Of Art University and Morehouse College have those majors. You can also look on Google by looking up information for your major as well, or by talking to someone who knows or might have a clue on what you are trying to do. Also make a list of college's that have the major you are trying to pursue. You can always meet with a counselor or student adviser and see what they suggest as well. Band is a good major and a lot of people do it. You will need to have a passion for it and make sure that this is the right major for you.

There are a lot of excellent collegiate music programs out there, so you need to do some research. I agree with Ms. C's comment - make a list of your priorities and then figure out which schools meet the most important ones and try to talk to people there. Most schools love having prospective students visit, and may even be able to arrange for you to meet some band members and get their perspective. Also consider your location preference - do you want to stay in Iowa? Is a plane ride OK or do you want to be able to drive back and forth? And cost - what is your budget? Do you want to apply for scholarships? Can you afford a private school or is a state school better?

Another resource is your school's guidance or career counselor, if you have one. Or your current band director - where did he or she attend college? And a basic google search for "best college music programs" can get you started.

Band is awesome - I played all through high school and college, and it can be a wonderful community. I wish you the best of luck!

Laura recommends the following next steps:

List your priorities for college
Make a list of people to talk to for more information
Google search for "best college music programs"
