Melisa’s Answer

Hi Derek,

Thank you for your thoughtful question. It may take some time to find your "dream job" but often, trying out different types of careers and opportunities you come across can help you decide what you do and don't like.

Take time to research different jobs and careers and ask questions, just like you are doing. If you are good at babysitting, you are also likely good at helping others, thinking on your feet and taking charge of situations. I too used to babysit and I remember facing some unexpected situations where you had to think quickly and resolve a challenge or conflict.

I’ve worked in retail sales, customer service and communications jobs. No matter what your career, I feel it helps to be a good communicator and team player.

You don’t have to necessarily decide right now what you want to do for the rest of your life, but you can start with doing more research and asking questions of others who are in jobs that interest you.

Best wishes for success in your education, life and career goals.

Melisa recommends the following next steps:

Seek out a mentor or trusted individual who has a career that interests you so you can learn more about their job. Set up an “informational interview” or see if you can shadow someone on the job.
Visit online discussion boards or groups in technology fields or careers that interest you.
Check out resources like CareerBuilder, Indeed.com and LinkedIn to search different careers that interest you, by geography, or city and state.

Gaurav’s Answer

Hi Derek,

Your question can be in two dimensions

a) You want to do something based on what you know.
b) You want to do something which you are passionate about

a) could be a good starter to get you engaged somewhere, my recommendation would be to ask yourself on b). What do you want do to. I would recommend to look for job which is of your interest.

Any job you want to pursue will need some preparation. As you are indicating that you know babysitting & technology, if that is indeed your interest, pick up specifics and do a self assessment on your level, do you see yourself fit as amateur, professional or expert ?. based on your self assessment, search for the right job on internet.

Wish you good luck

Gaurav recommends the following next steps:

Find your area of interest
Be specific on your area of interest / expertise
search for jobs based on your interest and level of expertise

Yao’s Answer

Hi Derek,

Try to write down the main responsibilities of each experience, as well as what you liked about each role. From that list, you should get an idea of the kinds of tasks you would prefer to do in a job and which ones you want to avoid. Next, make a list of your skills and strengths, and not just the technical ones. In order to find the career that is right fit for you, you must first get in touch with your 4 P's –

Yao recommends the following next steps:

Passion
Personality
Preferences (for work pace, type of work, work environment, etc.)
Principles (to learn more about these things, take self-assessments such as: What is Your Leadership Personality?)

Demetrius’s Answer

Derek, depending on which career you would like to go in whether it be technology or babysitting either can be rewarding. My daughter loved babysitting and after high school went to work at a day care. She loved it so much that the parents could see the passion and great care that she showed to the kids. She was privately hired from the daycare and is now a nanny for a family of four that was at the daycare, and is now traveling with the family.

Cortina’s Answer

Hi Derek!

Thank you so very much for submitting your question. This is not uncommon and many employers recognize this given that you are a student. You can explore things which give you joy and identify careers associated with this. As a student, you have the opportunity to explore various options by trying out jobs to see what brings you pleasure. Babysitting is experience in itself and you can use it to market yourself to potential employers. Think about it, in babysitting, you are providing customer service to the parents and the child as they are your customer. Don't be discouraged but rather use this as an opportunity to identify what you like. Hope this helps! :)

Danielle’s Answer

Hi there Derek. Don't sell yourself short! Babysitting and technology both are an excellent base for starting a promising career.

Babysitting will build your quick-thinking skills, people skills, and even customer service skills. When you're tending to another person you are providing them with an experience.

Technology is a great area to be involved with, and can give you an advantage when seeking a job.

In my younger years I taught myself how to code, program, and build websites. Years later when going for my first non entry-level position, these self-taught skills were what helped me to seal the deal on the position.

If you are interested in helping others and technology, the wireless business may be a great fit for you.

You could also explore computer programming, app development, video game development, or webdesign (UI/UX design) - just to name a few.

The key to learning more about what type of career you may enjoy is to research. LinkedIn is a great tool to network and communicate with people in industries that you may be interested in. You may even find positions, companies, or job types that you did not even know existed!

There are also many "career quizzes" that you can take online to help you determine which career paths may be right for you. Remember to use these as suggestion sites, and do not feel that you need to stick to what is suggested! A very reputable Career Quiz you can search for is through The Princeton Review's website.

I hope this helps! Happy Holidays!

Jason’s Answer

Derek,

You are not alone. There are so many individuals that don't know where to start when it comes to applying for jobs that will catapult them to a career. The first step is taking time to understand what you are passionate about. The activities you take part in usually are a good window into what our passions are. Your work experience can also align to those passions, but that is not always the case. If your passion is care-giving and IT then look for jobs that combine those to passions such as jobs with a company that produce applications, products, or services to support the care of infants or the elderly. If you discover your passions do not align to your work experience then determine what academic experience you have that would bridge the gap. There are times that academic projects and academic experience demonstrates a desire and competency in a professional realm. If you are not able to make connection between your past professional or academic experience and the jobs that align to your passions then you should look into online training and education. There are some amazing resources online to gain skills and expertise that may get you on the path to applying for and accepting a job that matches your interests.

Jason recommends the following next steps:

I recommend exploring Coursera or Udemy for online training and skills-building.
You can search for industry specifc groups on LinkedIn that you can join to expand your network.

Raymond’s Answer

This is a very common, I have been out of college for over 10 years and I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do. In the meantime, I am working as hard as I can in different areas to get myself out there and learn. Sales is a great area to get into if you are unsure. This can be retail, Business to Business, inside, or outside sales but you talk to a lot of people in different fields and you learn important skills such as time management and personal communication.

If you want a recommendation just based off of the babysitting and technology, I would look in to IT Project Management. It can be a very lucrative and rewarding field.

Good Luck
