Whether looking for an opportunity, trying to advance in your current company role, or want to present the best examples for what you bring to the table when speaking with a supervisor or manager about a project or internal advancement opportunity, the following guidance prepares you to readily speak to what you bring to the table and makes you a fit for an opportunity verses someone else.

Standout for Project or Advancement Opportunities
CNAs often have to make judgmental decisions in the order of meetings patients’ needs, especially if working in a facility that may be short staffed. Prepare examples of that you can readily recall when speaking with supervisor/manager about interest in a project or advance opportunity, or interest in expanding you skills for career development during a one on one session with supervisor/manager. Simpler to the resume/application, create examples with facts and practice saying them out loud that really highlight your compassion and drive.

Possible Phrasing for Sharing an Example (insert your own experience): “Mary, while volunteering at my local community center for adult day participants, conducting activities such as, group exercise session for 30 minutes or music selection for practicing simple dance steps to keep everyone moving, would often have to quickly change the lineup to quieter or less physical activities based upon participant’s needs attending on any particular day. This quick thinking and creativity, further demonstrates my commitment and compassion in helping others have the best caring experience possible, and sets me apart in working on this project (or moving into the advance role).”

Hiring Selection Process

You can begin right from start during the application process, setting yourself apart. while having the appropriate certification is vital, providing clear and concise examples of your compassion and caring ability for others, demonstrates professional maturity (this had nothing to do with chronological age) and understanding how your skills translates to project or position.

On an application or resume, capture work history and/or volunteer activities where you gained experience through interacting/caring for others on different levels that expanded your awareness and ability to share compassion and caring support. For examples, spending time with people that may be prone to loneliness such as seniors or children who may not have a good social network after school (boys/girls clubs), helping at a club/church/family event to ensure support and comfort of people attending who may have mobility concerns or experience social anxiety when entering/being around larger crowds, babysitting after work/school for siblings, individuals or a designated family, tutoring a friend or classmate in a subject you excel at and they may be struggling.
Sample Layout:

YMCA Community Social Picnic (Spring 2020)
• Assisted in organizing event facility location, tables and chair delivery, decorations, volunteer food items volunteers brought.
• Designed and posted flyers to market the community picnic.
• Contribution of time and support provided a great grate experience for over 300 plus attendees.

Always be early to work not just on time. Have a positive attitude. Be coachable. Let people tell you things that will help you with your job. Seek out new learning opportunities. Be the person that is friendly and helpful. Be kind and respectful to your patients. Treat them as if they were your family member. Never be afraid to speak up if something happens or goes wrong. You will make mistakes but learn from them. It has happened to all of us.

Familiarity, compassion and understanding will always set you apart as a caregiver. In all medical fields, knowing who you serve will always be the one thing that makes you exceptional in the eyes of your clients and patients. Work on familiarizing yourself with whoever you are working with and try lo learn and understand the demographic of the population you serve. You will be elevated in the eyes of your coworkers and you will be of most beneficial to the ones you serve.
