For physics majors, how does government research projects compare to those of private companies?

I am a senior in high school, one of my teachers had told me that government research and private research were different, primarily focusing on grant focused payment vs direct. What are other differences? #physics #research #government

Based on my understanding, physicists tend to be more focused on basics research in academia and federal government, whereas they are more focused in applied research in industries and private sector. For a recent example, research physicists at NIST worked on a very precise determination of the Planck constant in order to use it to define Kilogram instead of using the mass of a hunk of platinum-iridium alloy that’s been housed at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in Sèvres, France since 1889. On the other hand, an industrial physicist may work on translating knowledge from basic research into marketable products.

You also mentioned grant in your question. I suppose you are referring to research funding through grant proposals. In academia, most research funding come from grants awarded by agencies such as National Science Foundation (NSF) or DoD. In fact, even some projects at NASA are funded by outside agencies.

Jesús’s Answer

Governments as the etnity that takes the reins of the State, thus its Institutions, owns the credibility needed to collect data and submit scientific studies. On the other hand, Private Companies require the task of gaining credibility of the results they get from their studies.

I am trying to say that while economics domine the lives of the individuals, Politics and Governments decide the way individuals are going to live.
