Lisa’s Answer

Hello, Kay -

If I were in your position, I would focus on employment opportunities that allow you to demonstrate a variety of skills, such as effective written and verbal communication, project management, ability to take a leadership position (this can mean leading others and/or being the lead driver on a project or program), It's important that you resume show that you're a well rounded individual, capable of working independently as well as collaboratively. Definitely expose your variety of skill sets. Example jobs might include being an administrative assistant, clearing in a law office, being a coach for a children's sports team. There are several directions you can go - just make sure that you're not pigeon-holed into a single focus job. Best of luck to you!!

Susan’s Answer

Any type of customer service job will develop skills that transfer to most career choices. So don't be afraid to work at a fast food restaurant, retail store or car wash. Learning how to engage with customers and make them feel important is key.
On your resume, highlight behaviors not tasks. This is what recruiters look for.
E.G. Don't say "worked taking orders for fast food".....say....."Listened to the customer and assisted them with their choice."

Hi, Kay,
Congratulation on being so proactive about your career! I have a son that is just finishing his senior year at high school and I would give you the same advice I gave to my son :-) So here it goes... If you know what you want to pursue at college and beyond, I would definitely recommend you start looking for opportunities related to the subject. For example, My son's interested in pursuing a pre-med program in college so he is reaching out to his doctors' offices to see if there are summer internship, or some clerical or assistant-type opportunities for him. On the other hand, if you don't exactly know what you want to do after high school yet, which is ok, then you may want to use your high school jobs to a) find what your strengths are and what you like/not like to pursue further in your life, and/or b) get you general basic business skills that you would definitely use in any job you'd choose down the road. Either way, I'd recommend you keep options open at this point - after all you have your whole life ahead of you, full of opportunities!!! Volunteering or trying short-term summer jobs may help you find what fires up and what not so much, without having to make a long term commitment if you are not ready... Good luck!

Ken’s Answer

Hi Kay!

The best jobs that you could hold while still in high school would be those most closely related to the major that you think that you want to pursue in college.

That would show the school that you are familiar with and sure about the areas that you want to study.

Send thank you notes to those who help you. Please keep me posted. I would like to follow your progress!

Hi Kay! I admire your ambition and proactivity. In high school it can be difficult to find a job related to what you want to pursue in college/your career. Difficult not impossible, so this is where your creativity may have to come in. I would recommend pursuing maybe a hobby, if you are into beauty or shopping look for a retail job. In retail I believe you learn how to work in a team environment, and how to deal with people, thus enhancing your professional skills. Wishing you the best!
