What extra classes would you recommend a student aiming for nursing school take?

I'm in the middle of a pre-nursing program at my local community college. I only have a few sciences left to take but I also have opportunity to take extra classes. I enjoy learning. What extra classes would you recommend someone going into nursing that you think is beneficial in the future? #nursing #college

Erin’s Answer

Classes that would be beneficial included yoga, nutrition class, mindfulness, foreign language (I wished I took Spanish!), leadership, business...all of those would be additional benefit! Yoga, nutrition & mindfulness/meditation courses in particular will help both you and your patients. I use it for myself and to help reduce pain or anxiety in my patients. The nutrition piece is helpful to keep you healthy and teach your patients how to eat healthy. As a nurse, you are a leader, so leadership skills are a must. There are so many ways to be a nurse entrepreneur so business would be great to help you branch out if you ever want to. Good luck & enjoy the extra classes!

Dr. Darnelle’s Answer

If you are taking only pre-nursing entrance classes at a community college, chances are you may only be satisfying what you need for an A.S. degree. If you have not been awarded an A.A. degree, sign up for those classes that will also award you this degree as well.
Reason: You need your A.A. and A.S. degree courses to continue on to a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.

Dr. Darnelle recommends the following next steps:

If you have satisfied both A.A and A.S requirements then look at the pre-requirement you'll need before enrolling in a BSN program at the college/university of choice

Kerrie’s Answer

While fulfilling the prerequisite classes at a local community college for entrance into a nursing program, I would explore other classes that would adjunct to a nursing career, such as additional biology, nutrition, kinesiology, and psychology.

Another option would be to take classes towards an MBA or healthcare administration degree for long-term future plans depending on what kind of nursing you wish to pursue. So you could look into finance, computers, advance calculus, and mathematics, etc.

There are also degrees in law, criminal justice, and forensics related to nursing as well, so you could look into adjunct classes to complement those areas as well.

Really there are a plethora of options in becoming a nurse and the opportunities are endless! I would explore what might be of interest to you and take a class or two. Learning never ends and this way you can get your feet wet in an area that may interest you that you did not even know about!
