When is the best time to pursue graduate school? Should it be immediately after getting my B.A.? Or should I wait?

I will graduate soon, and I don't know if I should add experience to my resume before getting I apply for a Master's program. #teacher #professor #graduate-school #graduate

Miguel’s Answer

Hi! Nice question. In my experience, it will depend. For example, for some programs, such as MBA's, work experience it is sometimes required. It won't be an exclusive requirement though, if you think that you have what it takes to pursue graduate school, go for it.

I know people that have done both things, and it went well. Another aspect to take into account, is the value that the graduate school will bring to your job seeking process. You have to weight whether your job field requires more experience or education.

You can do it through job postings analysis. It's not easy to decide whether to defer graduate school for a while, and get some work experience. If you want to take it right away your B.A., you can get experience in the meantime through internships.

If I were to recommend something, it would be to wait one or two years before pursuing graduate school.

Hope this helps!

Matt’s Answer

My answer will echo what Miguel said above: it depends on your program. For myself, my program didn't require prior experience in the Sport Management industry, but I worked for a Minor League Baseball team and took the GRE to bolster my application. You'll also find that some requirements for programs or jobs are really a range rather than a hard line.

The best advice I can give is be open to both possibilities: research different programs and tests and keep an eye on teamworkonline.com and ncaamarket.ncaa.org/jobs for openings.
