An electrical engineer can be a very high paying job. I have a friend here at Dell Computer who has made his career as an Electrical Engineer. His work is very technical but very satisfying to him.

I wish you the best

Please dont chose your career only because of the money you can make on it. I would recommend you to analyze if you will really enjoy what you will do, as it is more probable for you to earn good money if you like what you do as you will do it right. Yes money is important, but you mental health is more important.

Jon’s Answer

Relative to most other fields yes electrical engineering pays well. Also engineers tend to earn a high starting salary but plateau rather quickly where some other majors like business start out lower but can grow to much higher levels.

However like Nakul I cringe when people pick a career based solely on the perceived ability to earn money. I know a few people that picked electrical engineering based on the salary list their guidance councilor provided them. They ended up changing majors. Electrical engineering is one of those majors that is rather difficult and different. Difficult in the sense of the math and concepts. Different because of the abstract nature of magnetism. I find a lot of people don't like electrical engineering because they can't touch the basic concepts. Yes you can see a light bulb turn on, but the basic concepts are very abstract, based on math and physics.

To echo Nakul's comment, if you are not passionate about your major you risk not doing well or not liking it. Keep in mind you are going to be working for some 40 plus years. Hopefully you are picking a field because you like it. Yes you can change majors (there is usually a cost in time and or money) and you can change careers. But I would hope you are picking a field because that is what you want to do and where your interests are.

Nakul’s Answer

Hi Jean.
I'll answer this questions based on some instances where people have asked me the same question though they were from a different background.
I personally think money should be the byproduct of what you do. What I mean by that is - If you do what you like, you will do that better than the other people, and effectively you will excel in that field and earn more money.

Now I have seen people earning less in the industries where other folks earns a lot and similarly folks earning a lot higher in the industries where the rest of the folks aren't earning enough. It actually depends on the value you provide to a place where you work.

Being said that, the probability(based on the statistics of which areas/businesses/industries pay) it might be difficult to get a high salary. But like I said if you do what you like then the chances of advancing in your career are higher and hence you can earn more. I have my friends in electrical background and do earn a lot of money.
I hope it helps!
