Rodrigo, I am very excited to hear that you want to attend college. Maria is right, the cost of college depends on the college you are looking to attend. I struggled myself to find a way to pay for college but through the National Guard, I was able to pay for college, gain valuable life experience, travel and learn leadership skills that have benefited me throughout my career. Although the military may not be for some people, I truly feel that you will get out of it what you put in to it. In some cases your college can be paid for with only a brief 6 year commitment to 1 weekend a month and a 2 week training in the summer. I feel you could contact your local National Guard recruiter to find out the specifics.

College is going to cost differently depending on which university you go to. Generally, the public universities are going to cost less than the private ones and you'll have more opportunities to get grants and scholarships. Additionally, you should strongly consider doing your first two years in community college if money is a big factor for your educational considerations.

Maria’s Answer

Hi Rodrigo, The cost to attend a college depends on the college that you choose. There are many options for attending college and you can always start out at junior college like DVC in Northern California and transfer after completing your first two years to a Major University. If you keep your grades up while attending a junior college, you may also qualify for scholarship money to help with funding. When I started out, I took the route of attending a junior college first while figuring out which path I really wanted to go down. It costed less money and gave my family a chance to save up for the rest. As a next step, I would suggest looking into Diablo Valley College or West Valley College to name a few and see how those options might fit into your budget.

Rodrigo: To begin your journey for higher education attending a Community College near you is a good option.. This will keep your expenses to a minimum. Thoroughly check out the community colleges in your area. Investigate their reputation by reading about them and also visiting them. Talk with the Admissions staff at the community college to gauge how much it will cost and how many credits you will want to earn each semester. They should direct you to the Financial Aide department to discuss finances and scholarship opportunities, as well as government grants.
