As an occupational therapist in California, are there options for incorporating the outdoors and nature into OT?

I am currently a COTA. I moved from NY to RI to go back to school for my masters in OT. After I finish my masters degree, I plan on relocating to the west coast, hopefully California. I love the outdoors but in the north east the time to be outside is limited by extreme cold or extreme heat....I would like to know if there are specific options for outdoor therapy or if I have to incorporate it my own creative way. #california #occupational-therapy #physical-therapy #therapy #medicine #hospital-and-health-care

Yes, you can absolutely bring the outdoors into OT in California. The weather alone makes it so much easier. When I lived in the northeast, I felt like I spent months stuck inside. California gives you sunshine and mild weather for most of the year. There are OTs who already run outdoor groups, camps, and nature-based programs. You can also be creative and take your clients outside for walks, balance practice, or even sensory play in parks and gardens. Gardening is another fun option that works well for fine motor and self-confidence. The best part is that you will enjoy it too. I’ve done sessions outside and noticed my clients were calmer and more engaged. I left feeling happier myself. You do not have to wait for someone to hand you the idea. You can build it into your own practice. So yes, the opportunities are there. And if you do not see what you want, you can create it. California is a great place for that kind of freedom.

I am a physical therapist but can suggest that you consider hippotherapy, therapy using horses, which could be done by both PTs and OTs and could also be done outside. I am sure there are more options but you might have to be creative. Look into offering your services to outdoor programs that service people with various disabilities. That is just one idea, I'm sure you can come up with many more. You might work at summer camps for people who have various disabilities, for example.

Good luck.
