What major should I consider if I want to travel?

I am majoring in Business Finance but the I want to change my major because Economics is not my best subject but I do not know what i want to major in. I wanted to be a financial advisory because i want to help people or company finance/ manage money. But If I had another option I would want a career that allows me to travel. (Not a Flight Attendant) Or I want a degree that gives me options. (And do not require the knowledge of Economics) #major #travel #job-options

I feel like a career in hospitality would be great for you if you are looking for plenty of traveling opportunities. I've worked in the hotel industry for the past ten years and have been to several states, due to the fact that I was able to transfer internally with the company I had been working for. Once you get in with a great hotel company for about a year, you are free to transfer anywhere in the WORLD and usually the hotel will pay for your moving expenses, if you are promoted. There's several perks to working in the hotel industry. One of my other favorite perks is the fact that the company I had worked for gave each of its employees a certain amount of free nights at any of that hotel brands locations in the world. Not bad at all, especially for the traveler. Good luck!

Thank you comment icon Thanks for the advice! I also want to know about what was your major in college and some of the key steps that helped you become successful so far. Jstewart
Thank you comment icon It was my pleasure! In college, I got my Bachelor's degree in Hospitality Management. The college I went to in Florida had an awesome program for Hospitality and what made it even better was the fact that it was only fifteen minutes away from Universal Studios and Walt Disney World. In college, I took a lot of different classes that were related to different tracks of the hospitality industry, such as food and beverage management, airline industry, country club management, history of wine, guest services management, event planning, hospitality marketing, theme park management, and lodging. Somewhere in between my sophomore and junior year, I decided that the hotel industry seemed extremely fascinating to me. Christine Kinsey

Geoffrey’s Answer

Hi JStewart,

If you are interested in travel and want to help companies to make / save money, it sounds like a career in consulting might be of interest to you...consultants often travel regularly in order to meet with clients and to complete projects for them. I'm a consultant and that's certainly been the case for me.

Concerning you selection of majors, based on your career interest, I'd suggest that Finance (and/or perhaps Accounting) is likely the best-suited option...though I'd encourage you to keep at your work in Economics, even if it isn't your strongest area, as its a helpful area of study. Overall, Finance and Accounting might be the best fit, as through those majors you'll become well-versed in how companies make / save / raise money, which seems to be what you'd like to do in the future.

Christine's comment is a good one as well...hospitality could also be a good fit for you, as the hospitality industry really represents the business of travel.

Hope that helps!

Geoff
