Thank you comment icon Dear Adriana, The joy of welcoming a new life into this world is indescribable and you will be able to give back anywhere in the world with your skill and heart for helping others. I totally agree with Maya’s comments above . In addition, I can’t stress enough the importance of taking care of yourself during this time of perseverance and hard work to become an obstetrician. Healthful eating (plant based whole foods), regular exercise and plenty of sleep will all be very important as you study and progress. Stay away from toxic substances and discouraging people, connect with those who will encourage and support you during your years of study and training. Never give up on your desire and mission to help others in this world. Having a meaningful career contributing to the greater good will keep you going during the tough times and definitely leads to high satisfaction with your career choice. By taking care of your own health, you will be able to withstand the rigors of training and also be more likely to encourage your patients to care for themselves too. We are seeing such a surge in chronic disease related to lifestyle choices and as a physician, you will always lead by example. Being an Ob/GYN will give you an incredible opportunity to make an impact in the lives of every patient you care for. I admire your spirit of abundance in wanting to give back through your work. Don’t give up. You can do this. It will be hard, but the most rewarding things in life usually are. Mary Elizabeth Barker MD

Maya’s Answer

Hi Adriana! That is great that you want to help people. In order to be an obstetrician/ surgeon you are going to have to go to medical school, but before that you need to go to college. While you are in college you will need to take the required classes and exams while also volunteering and doing research in labs so that you can be a competitive applicant when it is time for you to apply to medical school. The steps I just described are the first general things you are going to have to do and once you get into medical school you'll need to pass the exams and classes and apply for residences. Once you get into a residency program you will train under an attending obstetrician/ surgeon for a number of years and then you will finally be a working obstetrician/ surgeon. From college to residency the whole process takes about 12 years (4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, and 4 years of residency).

Maya recommends the following next steps:

Apply to college with a major you enjoy and are confident you can do well in.
While in college maintain a high gpa, get a high MCAT score, volunteer in a hospital, and do research in a lab.
Last year or two of college start applying to medical schools.
Once in medical school study hard and pass all prep exams.
Apply for residencies and complete them.
