Deijana’s Answer

yes, of course, we all have moments in our lives when we ask ourselves why we are doing this? But that's not a bad thing, sometimes it's that moment where people's lives change completely. Don't be afraid to reassure yourself that you're still going after what you want. Maybe you've grown and been exposed to something new that you might want to change things. College isn't for everyone, but if you got there, it's an accomplishment, be proud, and keep going. If you are overwhelmed take a step back to breathe. You have to take care of yourself while grinding. Your want to give up is not giving up on college, you want to be a surgeon then this is your path, if you stop it, your only giving up on yourself. Believe in yourself!

Gloria’s Answer

HI Tristian,

There were several times that I wanted to quit college before I was done. And it took me 17 years to finally reach that dream. That means that I quit for periods of time for a long time. I was raised to believe that I would have to graduate from college to be able to get a job. That wasn't true, but the shame of not getting a degree still didn't help me reach it. What did? I was laid off from a job that I really loved and I could not get another job in that same field. Why? I didn't have a bachelor's degree. It took me two years to get back to my dream job. In that time, the frustration of being denied at job interview after job interview, I completed my degree. It is not the way that I would recommend earning a degree. So what would I recommend for you? I would ask you now - how passionate are you about being a surgeon? Is it more important than any other thing? College will take a lot of your time. Sometimes you are going to have to study instead of going to parties or missing special events. You have to want the degree to study while you are sick or going to class in bad weather. You will also need to be good at time management and make sure that you take care of your mental health while you are in school. There are going to be hard times. Make sure to ask for help when it gets hard.

Krasti’s Answer

Hi Tristian,
There were certainly times when I felt like I wanted to give up while I was in college. I think you will be surprised to know that most students actually feel this way. Quitting college definitely sounds like the easier option, especially when you know that there are some people who have become successful even without a college degree. However, I would have to say that even without a degree, it still requires a special skillset to become successful and sometimes can make it that much harder because you will need to prove to people that you are the right fit for the job even without all the education.

Either way, I would highly recommend asking yourself why you are asking this question. Is it because the exams are too difficult? If so, maybe look into tutoring, or forming study groups to help with understanding the subject. Or is it because you are too overwhelmed with work and there's not enough time to do anything? If this is the case, it might be worth looking into time management tips and keeping a schedule so that you are on track. Or is it because you simply don't enjoy the subject? Then maybe exploring a different area of expertise will be better for you. You want to understand why you are feeling this way so that it is easier to work on the core issue instead of just giving up and quitting altogether. By doing so, you can make an informed decision and think about the future you really want to have. But just know that you are not alone so keep striving for the best. Good luck!

Yasemin’s Answer

Hi Tristian! There were definitely times when things were tough for me in college, especially my junior year but no I didn't want to give up. I hope to be a physician as well, and it can be difficult at times because we are all human but it's important that when you are feeling stressed to find time to yourself as well and listen to your emotions. Have a supportive group of friends, exercise, meditate, journal and just find ways to relieve any stress or worries you have. If you believe you are doing your best then you must have faith that things will work out!

Best of luck!

Brandy’s Answer

Hi Tristan,

I think this is a common way to feel about school and various other things in life. An important thing I've realized is when things get tough, it's okay to stop and rest. Sometimes you need to reevaluate why you started what you did and how completing whatever you are doing will benefit you in the future. Usually the most difficult times in life are also some of the most rewarding. Writing down the challenges you are facing that make you want to give up can also help you to figure out how to deal with each challenge individually rather than just feeling overwhelmed by everything. For example, if you have a ton of assignments due at once and you're feeling like giving up on all of them, it's a good idea to write down each task, write down what it would take to complete that task, and see if any deadlines can be negotiated to help give you more time.

Kiirsten’s Answer

Hi Tristian!

Great question to ask! For me personally, there were several times where I wanted to leave my college and just go back home (for different reasons as well). One of the times that I wanted to leave was after my first semester actually, I had originally chosen a major that I thought I wanted, but the classes I took didn't end up appealing to me, and the school I attended had a very different atmosphere than what I was used to. I ended up changing my major and having fun-- yes certain classes were tough, but I managed to get through them. If in the event you have asked the question because you're feeling overwhelmed, speak with an advisor on tackling the spring semester, maybe don't take as many classes so you can focus and do well in a few rather than spread yourself thin and do mediocre in them. I see you want to become a surgeon, although I did not pursue that career, I do have friends that went to medical school and it is a lot of work, as well as stress, but to this day they find all of their efforts very rewarding and they enjoy what they do!

Best wishes!
