Kelly’s Answer

For the past four years, my dog has been attending a training facility. The trainers there have diverse educational backgrounds, which makes the experience quite enriching! Some trainers have degrees in animal science, and further specialized in pet therapy or counseling. If you're keen on exploring this field, check out this program: https://animalscience.cahnr.uconn.edu/ (Note: I have no affiliation with this university).

One of the trainers was previously a vet technician, while others brought their business acumen to the table, focusing on the logistical aspects of training.

The American Kennel Club offers some excellent advice on becoming a dog trainer: https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/training/how-to-become-a-dog-trainer/. I've personally completed the Canine Good Citizen test mentioned there, along with a few trick dog levels.

I'd also recommend joining a professional organization to keep abreast of the latest practices in dog training. Here's one you might find interesting: https://apdt.com/.

Kelly recommends the following next steps:

Look into formal education programs that align with your intersts
Consider following up with the AKC and their recommendations
Look into the association of professional dog trainers.

Thomas’s Answer

"The barrier to entry to this field is quite low, as no formal degree is necessary to begin working as a dog trainer. Many dog trainers learn their trade from firsthand experience, apprenticeships, internships, and certification programs that enhance their professional credentials."

Elaine’s Answer

I would apply at one of the larger pet store chains that offer training classes. If hired, you would be trained by their regional trainer before hosting classes on your own. Also, volunteering with a dog rescue organization would also help and they would upskill you on dog training skills.

Dr. James’s Answer

I have noticed there are a lot of people from Utah asking about being a veterinarian and working with animals.
The best way to obtain an answer to your question is to go to your local animal hospital or vet clinic and ask them. I bet they would be more than happy and willing to talk to you and give you advice. They can give you great guidance as to what to study in school and what to do and avoid, based on their personal experiences. There may even be opportunities to volunteer at these locations so you can start obtaining experience in this field as well as start making valuable contacts you can use as references.
Good luck!
