Lindsay’s Answer

Hi Bella,
I was an Interior Design major and found myself googling this question when I was in school. Starting out can be tough in many industries where your experience and portfolio of projects elevates your financial success. If this is a field that excites you, I encourage you to think of the first years starting out where you might make less money than other industries as the foundation and plan for the longer goals and achievements. Once you have experience and build your professional network you will be in a position to make more money if thats what you desire.

Having said that, some practical advise I hope to offer is the importance of getting an internship at an architecture or interior design firm. This can provide invaluable insight into this career and set you off on the right foot to make decisions around what type of company you might want to work for, what type of design you want to focus on (residential, commercial, mixed use) and meet all kinds of professionals with qualifications and education you can consider for the direction you choose.

Try to think about whats most important to you: working for yourself? Financial stability? The type of projects you design? and meet professionals that have accomplished those things.
