William’s Answer

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has reported that one in ten construction site workers are injured every year. On construction sites, accidents can happen frequently. Each day, on average, two construction workers die of work-related injuries in the United States. In fact, one in five workplace fatalities are construction-related.
There is a lot to be said for the OSHA rules and regulations. Through out the years the accidents that has happened we have learned the most common and the ways to prevent them.

Eric’s Answer

As a former contractor, I can say you never know when you might get hurt. It is never intentional I can tell you that. For example I was using a Framing Nail gun applying the double top plate on a structure when I pull the trigger the nail hit a "Wood Knot" and kick back into my chest. Lucky for me it did not penetrate to deep. I had know way of knowing that Knot was there or that it wouldn't go through....funny like that.
Now OSHA does have training to make aware of potential issues but even that won't stop crazy circumstances from happening. Just be alert and observe your surroundings when on a jobsite.

Great questions.

Jon’s Answer

Per OSHA https://www.osha.gov/stopfalls/
"FALLS ARE THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH IN CONSTRUCTION. In 2018, there were 320 fatal falls to a lower level out of 1,008 construction fatalities (BLS data). These deaths are preventable."

But keep in mind this is across all companies. Some/many companies have a better safety record than others and pride themselves in providing an accident free workplace.

In addition this includes falling down for example holes or shafts and to a floor below. I couldn't easily find data for falling from a roof or while working outside of a building.

Mandi’s Answer

Some trades are more prone to INJURY than others, but most all DEATHS are preventable if you have been properly trained on the tools you are using, follow your company and OSHA’s safety guidelines/standards, and stay alert to your surroundings. Most accidents happen because workers become complacent.

Dan’s Answer

Hey Bryant,

That's a good question as Safety is always an important factor with construction projects.
Like Jon mentioned the statistics are available on line at OSHA and i am sure you could narrow it down maybe even by trade. Most companies today have safety programs that include specific training as well as procedures to be followed on site. Usually safety meetings in the field as well as actual safety inspection teams in the field as well keeping an eye on operations and the actual employees to keep the sites as safe as possible .

We hope that no Builders ever get hurt.

Have a great day

Dan
