Hi Tiffanie! The ability to communicate well is a primary skill that has to be honed. Most people are terrible listeners and terrible at having interactive conversation. Most people report information in long boring monologue's vs an interactive dialogue or interactive chatting.. Most people politely pretend to be listening but are usually just waiting for their turn to talk. If you are talking at or with someone else chances are you have 30 seconds before they half way tune you out. Practice answering a question with short answers and then asking the other person a question when you finish. I used to give long answers to short questions. My wife politely suggested when I asked "What was his problem with "sometimes you can be pretty boring' " Ouch! Run ins our family unfortunately so was hard to notice. The trick is to learn to stop somebody in a polite way with out offending them. That's one of the communication skills. Another is learning the difference between open ended and dead ended questions that can easily be answered with a yes or no. Listening its self is a major skill. Most people confuse other peoples politeness with their interest. Sales people and customer service positions are beginning positions where that skill is critical. Think of a Doctor who doesn't listen. An Attorney who wants to tell you how much they know. Not pretty is it? Thanks for asking! Look up a book called The Art of Listening! If you want to! :-)

Having the ability to write and speak effectively will always be helpful. People will take you much more seriously if your language is clear and organized. Some ability to use technology and software is becoming relevant for everyone these days. There are few careers that are not being affected by the drive toward technology. Also, this last bit may sound weird, but some familiarity with basic accounting and budgeting is useful for someone in most industries and careers. It gives a lot of context for what is happening around you.
