Hello Rotchil:

Many students are in this stage of not knowing which direction to go when it comes to picking an area of study. Colleges offer so many majors and picking one can be a challenge.

To help narrow your area of studies I would recommend taking a Strength Finder survey. You can get it by ordering a "new" book that has a code with it. You can take the survey online. The book is "StrengthsFinder 2.0 " by Tom Rath. Once the survey is complete you, it will highlight areas of your strength and you can read about them in detail. Then track your strengths to majors offered at schools. At Least you will have a good idea of where to start. Hope this helps.

Good luck.

Enrique’s Answer

Hello Rotchil, I have my Bachelor's and Masters of Science in IT both with a focus in Security, as in Cybersecurity. Have you considered that path? I've also seen these education paths called Bachelor's of Science of Cybersecurity, or Information Assurance, to name a few. As an idea, look up IT future job market predictions to guide you down your IT path?
In my experience, the Cybersecurity field is always growing and there are not enough people to go around, which means good pay and ability to find a job. There are certifications that most cyber folks get as well, like Comptia Security+ to name one, however, a lot of Bachelor degree programs provide those opportunities as part of their curriculum. Maybe take a look at cybersecurity IT paths.

Hi Rotchil,

I would say you are not the only one. In many cases, the truth is many people don't really know what they want to do or how to achieve what they want.

I suggest that you could review which part of the information technology you want to study in and what kind of IT job you want in the future. There are different types of information technology jobs, and so it will help you to understand the requirements for a particular information technology role, which will be your end state.

Please refer to this page - https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/finding-a-job/types-of-it-jobs - for different types of IT jobs. Hope this helps.

Good luck!
