Wonderful on your decision to become a Registered Nurse. Nursing is the most trusted profession and has an impact on healthcare across the world (Saad, 2020 & World Health Organization, 2021). Nursing studies are rewarding and challenging just as the nursing career is after graduation. Nursing students study science, (e.g. biology, anatomy and physiology, research), communication and team work skills, how to think critically and innovatively, and serve patients, community, and the world. There is an option to select entering an Associate Degree program, Bachelor Degree program or programs that combine into Master’s and Doctoral programs. The more education you receive in degrees and certifications (within an outside of nursing) the more job opportunities.

The responsibilities are great as nurses can be the first to identify a problem in a patient and intervene with emergency care and communicate with other healthcare providers to work together as a team. The opportunities for where nurses’ work is endless. Commonly, you will see nurses working in hospitals. However, there are various places outside of the hospital as well. I can not name them all because there are some that do not exist today because you may be the one to discover another place where nurses are needed. Here are a few examples of areas to work as a nurse outside of the hospital setting, to get your imagination flowing:
*Telehealth (online health visits)
*School nursing
*Politics
*Clinics
*Health centers
*Ministry / Missionary / Parish
* Camp nursing
*Correctional facilities
*Flight nursing
*Developmentally disabled
*Home health
* Legal Nurse Consultant / Nurse Attorney
*Independent contractor/own one’s own business
* Nurse Life Planner
* Research
*Group homes
*Author/writers

Whatever you select, bring your passion and perseverance (also referred to as grit), and bring your caring heart and scientific mind. As you bring these traits your patients and team members you work with will know your dedication and commitment in caring for others.

All the best.
