Is nursing school anything like the real world?

I'm currently studying for an entrance test for UTMB's school of nursing, and I'm very interested in knowing what to expect after school. I dropped out of school for a while and now I'm certain that I want to go back to school to pursue a degree in nursing. #nurse #registered-nurses #nursing-education

Dear Enrique,
I have been out of nursing school for a while now- more than 30 years- but I can tell you that nursing school takes the PARTS of everything that you need and works to help you put all of the parts together by the end of your education so that you can function well with the background knowledge. Here's what I mean by that: You may be working in an Emergency Dept or a Med-Surg Floor after you graduate - but as you work in your field, there will always be something that "comes up" that you haven't experienced before, even if you have been a nurse for many years. Your nursing education works to help you understand body systems and how to critically think through what the patient needs. So you might not feel like an expert when you graduate- but you are really just beginning your education-- because your BSN is your basic knowledge- like a platform- and then as you work you will continue to build on this background to add to your skills and education. I love nursing and the BEST part of it is that you can help people while you continue to learn- it's never stagnant, always increasing in evidence and quality and that excites me! Best of luck in your future Enrique- Hang in there and follow the dream!
