What is a good way to begin gathering experience in clinical psychology?

I am approaching my senior year of college and have little to no experience in psychology work (outside of classes) . Although I am eager I am not confident in my ability to find and land jobs in the field. #career #counseling #clinical-psychology

Thank you comment icon Hello, Sierra! You definitely want to begin seeking out internship opportunities to gain that experience. Check with your Career Services department, even the Dean or Department Head of Psychology at your school. I hope this advice helps. Good luck! Montoya McNeil

Hello Sierra,
To gain valuable experience network within your psychology department. If your school has a graduate and or doctoral program reach out to current students. These students will have knowledge and insight when and where to gain experience in your field.

Jazmin’s Answer

See if your college has a job/volunteer sign-up site. If they don't, talk to your psychology professors to see if they have job shadowing opportunities or know of colleagues who do. I was a volunteer at a prestigious research clinic for a couple of years before getting hired on. I've been there 8 years and have risen to position of Psychologist :) It's all about getting your foot in the door.

I agree with what the others have suggested. To add to that I think it is very important to experience your own therapy.

It is hard to understand the process unless you've had your own experience.

Mark’s Answer

Hands on experience in a behavioral health related job or practicum will give you the kind of exposure you need to better understand how intervention and treatment actually works. If becoming a psychologist is well suited for you, these kind of experiences will likely serve to better inform you and to inspire you for the nuts and bolts of the profession. If your major is in psychology, there should be practicum opportunities in our senior year. Wishing you the very best in your educational and professional pursuits toward a career in the "helping professions."

Very best regards, LTC Mark j. Hovee, Psy.D.
