Gil’s Answer

Many careers involve psychology. If you plan to be a therapist and deal directly with people you will need at least a master's degree and also obtain a state license as a licensed professional counselor (LPC). You can also go into social work, and again you would need at least a master's to obtain certification (LCSW). Psychologists work in different settings. They can have their own practice or work for a government agency or in an educational setting, such as a public school or university. It all depends on what setting you want to work in and what type of work you want to do. Are you interested in mental health counseling? Test administration? A lot depends also on what you're comfortable with. Would you be willing to work with drug or alcohol addicts? Child molesters or rapists? Prisoners? People with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)? Psychopaths or sociopaths? Better to determine where your interest lie first and then obtain the education that will help you reach your goal.

Dr. Ray’s Answer

Dear Michelle,

I think the two people who have already responded to your question gave you very good information. I would only add that an undergraduate degree in psychology or some other behavioral science is often required for such positions as probation officers, child and adult protective services workers. Beyond those types of jobs it is more like a liberal arts degree that doesn't qualify you for anything but is often seen as useful by businesses and other organizations.

I hope this is helpful. Good luck with your career pursuits.

The best thing to do is take the time to research each to determine which one is what you are most interested in. Or maybe Therapist or Counseling also could be a option.
