Great question. Making yourself available not just to your boss , but also to your entire team and clients/customers if applicable would be a great start . Having a can do / selfless mindset will improve your overall approval rating at work and help you earn the trust of others quickly. I would check in on a recurring basis ( does not have to be daily) with key people in the organization to see if they need help , share success stories or have business conversations with them. Most employees mistakenly avoid checking in with their bosses because they don't want to disturb them. This is a mistake especially when there also exists less time consuming ways of communicating like e-mail and business texting over apps like Skype. Even when I am extremely busy, anyone sending me great ideas , sharing success stories or offering themselves to help the organization more will always leave a positive impression on me.

Hey Jaeden.

In my experience, the best way to gain your boss's trust is to be honest and transparent. As a manager, I do not expect my employees to be perfect at everything, or expect that they can handle every situation, but I do expect that they start with honesty and openness. This allows me to help them grow in their career.

Second, you have to follow through on your commitments. If you say you are going to do something, or you are given a task, you need to finish it out. Over time, your performance will establish trust.

Also, trust goes both ways. The more you trust your boss and their directions and instinct, the easier it will be for them to trust you.

Hi Jaeden,

Great Question! It sounds as if you are on the right path with being a good helper and hard worker. Those are amazing qualities that are needed and your boss should be appreciative of them as is. It also helps to be personable, non controversial, i.e. stay away from divisive conversation topics, and get to know someone personally. this helps create a relationship which is almost as important as doing a good job on time.

Sometimes you can have the smartest person in the world working for you, but if folks dislike working with that person it can create challenges in accomplishing even the simplest of tasks.

focusing on being a well-rounded individual with a solid work ethic, that is approachable and takes feedback well makes for a fantastic employee :).

Hey Jaeden,

All of the answers here are very accurate, so I'll agree with them all first.

I'd also like to offer one personal anecdote from my experiences: A colleague of mine once told me that the best way to gain a manager's trust is to do what they ask enough times to where they'll have no problem handing off projects or delegate work for you to own. This isn't to say you should blindly do your manager's bidding, but once you've established yourself as a reliable teammate, the extra layer of red tape that you'd normally need to pass through to get something done will fall away. Even better, your manager will begin to trust you to do the things *you* enjoy and want, rather than question them. It'll open up the workspace more and more. A lot of this comes with fantastic communication – which is the foundation of teamwork. When will you know they trust you? Well, they may just say it outright, or one day they'll delegate work that they would normally do – thus proving their level of trust and giving you added responsibilities.

I think the best way to earn trust is to be yourself. Be open, be genuine, actively listen, bring in ideas, align on deliverables, be engaged, be positive, deliver, ask for feedback, raise hand when you need help and be a good team player.

Jaeden - a way to gain you boss' trust could be by using your skills to protect him or her as well as your teammates, the organization, and its customers to the best of your ability. So, you might start off by asking your boss what kind of things cause him or her problems and then figure out ways to use your skills to prevent these problems from occurring.

I had a coach that told me that the best team players are ones that can not only play their own position but use their skills to protect their teammates from getting hurt or making mistakes. My coaches wisdom has remained with me to this day.

With all of this said, you have to make sure that you continue to get your job done first. You can't do EXTRA, until you get the required minimum finished.
