What careers are available with a B.A in Public Heath?

Hello! I am currently applying for the public health major (B.A) and can’t help but wonder what career opportunities exist. As when I ask advisors they tell me PH is a broad major with so many job opportunities but never really seem to say what exactly. I’ve seen Reddit’s on PH majors who state that a MPH/MHA is necessary. Thus I’m hoping my post comes across anyone who knows/is someone who majored on PH and can inform me on the career opportunities! Thank you:) #career #college #college-major #career-choice

I did not major in Public Health but off the top of my head I would say PH majors could work for a county or state health department. They could also work for a hospital, or maybe a city. Many larger cities have people that advise the city leaders on matters of public health. But that would take some experience to land a job like that.

Your best path for advice would be to reach out to someone in the healthcare field that you know- maybe a nurse or or someone that works for the local health department. If you don't know anyone, look up the number for your local health department and ask to speak to the director. Tell them you are a student and you are interested in public health and you wanted to find out what possible careers you could pursue.

Most professionals in the public health field would be more than happy to talk with you about the field.

Hello! There's a variety of jobs you can get with public health ranging from hospital administration to research. Pretty much anything that you can think of relating to the health of the general public there's a job for. Community health centers, homeless shelters, epidemiology, environmental health, health promotion... the list goes on. You're advisors are right that it's a broad field. I would recommend that you narrow down what specific parts of public health you're interested in and what made you want to get into public health then go from there.

With a bachelor's in Public Health, you can work as a Public Health Advocate, Disease Prevention Specialist, Health Education Specialists, and Emergency Response Planner. The difference in having a master's in public health is that the options would be a lot different because of the type of agencies that will want to hire you.

RAVI’s Answer

Opportunities are plenty and it is the one of the few lines of business that can not be outsourced!!
1. You can work in a variety of Govt agencies, country, state, and at federal levels.
2. CDC, FDA, Insurance companies and hospital chains all need PH specialists to either implement or define programs to comply with the PH policies set by the agencies.
3. You can create your own consulting program/business to consult to all of the above agencies.
4. Teaching PH at school/college levels with advance degrees.
5. Writing articles, books about PH for news media and other agencies.
6. Lobbyists, or working with Senators, Congressman etc.

I am sure I only touched the surface. I am not close to the field. People close to the field might have a lot more insights.

Do some research on your local PH officials at county and state levels, or some professors in colleges/universities, try to network with them on LInkedIn and seek out more advise/guidance directly. Many of them will provide more insights.
