Brandon’s Answer

It would really depend on multiple factors, like what credentials you will have in degrees and certificates like Michael has pointed out in his answer. To add to his answer, by getting certification in the field, it is possible to have a significant increase in pay. For some jobs, the pay has increased by around 20 to 50 percent with certification.

George’s Answer

It's a great move to know about the job before you start down the path training for the job.
US Bureau of Labor Statistics << https://www.bls.gov/ >> tracks everything about employment. Salaries are different: in different parts of the country, different states, counties. Training and certification are a big deal and a big part of the answer to your question. You should get National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification!!!!!! This is the standard for long-term success in the mechanic world. Salary also depends on the type of mechanic: automotive, diesel, heavy equipment, RV, boat, farm equipment, ... ...
Most mechanics start with High School classes in the field. High schools often offer community college credit for some classes. In the Community College, you can pick up a 2 year Associate Degree and many of the different certifications ASE offers. AFTER Associate Degree - most auto manufacturers offer their own extensive training on their brand: Ford, Honda, Chevrolet, etc...

Bottom Line: wages vary around the country. EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, and EXPERIENCE lead to the highest salaries.
