How can I find out what career is best for me?

Hi, in very outgoing person. I love helping those in need , somehow through out the years I have lived in my path I have always encounter with people who have some sorta past trauma as a child. I've noticed that I love listening to people with troubles and end up advising them according to my life situations and lifestyle. ,I love putting others troubles first than my own
I sometimes even forget to help my self ,but not because I'm exoecting something in return ,like a thank you or any thing like that ,just love helping ,making my self feel useful in this world ,I currently attend my community church where I get to talk to others and hear them out ,I'm in my church's singing group, also did a little bit of children biblical teachings. Honestly I'm not in school, I'm a fulltime custodian, and I'm thinking of going back to school to become I guess a counselor, but I'm not sure if is the correct answer career I want to fallow. #psychology

I would just like to say that I admire your heart. You seem to have such a kind and thoughtful spirit!

Before I answer your question, I would like to encourage you and say that it's "ok" to not know 100% what career you want to get into and it's COMPLETELY normal to change your major/interests. For example, I graduated with a degree in nutrition and found myself passionate about people and food. After gaining experience and learning from colleagues, I found that marketing started to become an interest and that's where I am at currently (and I'm also learning how to code, so as you can see, interests change and that's great!). For you to figure out what career is best for you is to talk to people, learn from them and their experiences and try it yourself! You don't like it? That's ok! Try something else.

I think the key to figuring out your career path is to be willing to learn, fail, and learn again. Never feel like you're stuck or that it's the end. Hope this encourages you.

Hi Mae,
Based on what you have said, it does sound like you might enjoy a career in counseling or social work. Both careers involve listening to and talking with people, and helping them solve problems. Counselors and social workers may have either a bachelors degree or a masters degree. Since you are not in school now, you may want to look into taking some courses at a community college near you as a first step. This can be an affordable way to get back into school and earn some credits. You can then transfer to a four year college or university when the time is right. Good luck!

Hello there, Putting other's need as first requires a big heart and you have it. That's the great thing about being human.
I am glad you are looking for the path where you seek others' happiness and provide support who are in need. Helping others never stops at any stage if we are ready for it.
We can help few people today with our current capabilities but we can increase and multifold that happiness in others by stretching more and more help to the needy people. This can be done when we are more capable in finance, knowledge, communication, etc.
More the strength we have, more we can give. In my perspective, the profession doesn't matter to help people. So I recommend you to think about your interests to set/choose the right career. Put your efforts to reach and be available to the needy ones.
I hope I could be of some help to your question.
ALL THE BEST.
