Dear Andres

Good resume is crucial to land a good job. Here are some of the points you can ponder over.....

1. Before applying, its advise to read carefully requirements of the said position and customize your resume accordingly. You can take recourse to previous resumes online or through your acquaintances.

2. Pay particular heed to job description key words and incorporate accordingly in your resume.

3. Resume ideally should not be more than 2 pages...as attention span of employer could be compromised due to number of applications received

4. Hence a resume should be brief and concise with thrust on key skills and accomplishments.

5. Finally always update yourselves with latest development in the field (either through pursuance of academic degrees and or hands on training). This will boost your creativity and confidence and standout from rest of the crowd you will be competing with.

Good Luck for all your Endeavors.
Cheers!

Hi Andres,

I'm in the insurance industry, so while not in the same field you're interested in, having a good resume is a universal requirement for any industry. Here are the things that have stood out to me:

Make sure there are no spelling errors and the formatting is consistent. You'd be surprised how many qualified candidates get set aside if they appear to have been lazy or disinterested in those details.
Bulleted summary of skills/attributes at the top (below your name/contact information).
Note all your relevant experience, but also highlight unique experience that sets you apart from other candidates.
Note special accomplishments outside your career, such as community involvement, athletic/academic achievements, etc.
Adjust your resume to the specific job you're applying for, ensuring you've incorporated key words that are relevant to the role. Avoid a 'one size fits all' approach.

Beyond this, I advocate following up with the employer after applying and after an interview. It shows you're interested, and in particular after an interview, comment on a couple things that stood out to you during the interview about the company, manager, things discussed etc. Little things like this can set you apart and demonstrate your genuine interest in the company/position.

Hope this helps, and best of luck!

Gene

Priya’s Answer

For my field, I think adequate training and experience would look best on my resume. And also being able to communicate my values and my passion in my field. I think I became more appealing to employers once I was able to convey the experience I got from my previous jobs, as well as convey why I care about my profession from my point of view =). What personally makes me passionate about my career, and my experience.
