Community colleges are a great way to get started in college if you have one close by, especially if your state offers reduced tuition. While 23 states do offer four year bachelor degrees, most community colleges only offer two year degrees with the reduced credits as Natalie highlighted. These are usually called Associates degrees. You can also get Certificates at most colleges that help further make you valuable. Most people transfer those credits to another college (be careful that you chose one that accepts them), and then get a Bachelors. This effectively gives you a major and a minor in that you would have a Bachelors in XX from the four year college and an Associates in XX from the community college. You can continue onward and upward from the bachelors. Good luck!

Natalie’s Answer

Hi KJ,

Most community colleges don't offer minors because usually students want to graduate taking the minimum amount of credits. Most community college degrees are 60 credits and a minor would require more credits. Additionally, most bachelor's programs have a limit of how many credits they would accept and a minor might put a student over for credits. Most community college have a liberal arts requirements and elective requirements, providing the student with some flexibility.

Best,

Natalie

Adrian’s Answer

Most community colleges do not offer minor programs unless they are four year programs. They usually only offer basic elective courses and nothing too specific as opposed to a University college that have a broader spectrum of courses.
