Hassan’s Answer

If you're referring to Physical Therapist then http://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/pt/ptlic.htm has all the NY licensing requirements.

"Physical Therapist Program Located Outside the United States that is not NYS Registered or CAPTE/APTA Accredited, you must have:
completed a program satisfactory to the Department which is substantially equivalent to a master’s or higher degree program in physical therapy registered by the Department and which culminates in a degree or diploma accepted as satisfying the educational requirements for the practice of physical therapy by the civil authorities of the country in which the studies were completed."

Beth’s Answer

Hassan’s answer was great. Each state has very specific guidelines for foreign trained therapists. The guidelines are explained in the practice act of the state. You can find it by googling PT license board and search for practice act. Texas makes you take an English proficiency test as well. The American Physical Therapy Association has good resources also.

Beth recommends the following next steps:

Research your states PT practice act
Get a copy of you school curriculum for review
Be sure your English language skills are good.

Case’s Answer

Reach out to your state board of physical therapy for the specific requirements and APTA-NY for resources. The state organizations often have mentorship programs, and volunteering in the organization is great experience and great networking which can lead to opportunities. Also, if finances are a concern, consider pursuing a physical therapy assistant degree, then look into bridge programs from PTA to DPT. The state or national organizations may also know if there are scholarships or aid available for foreign- trained PTs.
