Jerry’s Answer

I doubt there is any such thing as an age level. I taught American government and politics for thirty-eight years and then started in on teaching modern European history.

But first, you have a lot of research to do. So many things.

- History of what?
- Time frame
- Picking the right college/university for the type of history you are interested in.
- At what level do you wish to teach history?
- What part of the country do you wish to settle in?

And more. And more.

Some of these do not have to be answered right at this point. And once you enter college/university you will get more information to help you explore further. As in if you major in history, you will in all probability have to take a range of history course. Inside that range you will hopefully be able to find the right fit for you. If it's a right fit, your enthusiasm will help you to move forward in your chosen career.

Lisa’s Answer

Age level? Whenever you feel ready! No such thing as one age level. Ask yourself…Do I want to work with young people, even though it is hard work? Am I ready to put in many hours? Am I prepared to deal with bad administrators, or tough school districts. You don’t get to make choices.

Lisa recommends the following next steps:

Do you love learning history? Ask yourself!
If you’ve had a good social studies/history teacher ask them why they are teachers.
Observe history/social studies teachers and ask them about their jobs
