Feeling confused about your career path can be a challenging and figuring out what's best for you as a professional may require a significant amount of time, research and effort. The steps you take to change your career may differ on your journey, depending on your current position, level of experience, education and aspirations etc. . There are a few key things you can take to identify your professional needs and interests so you can make the shift toward a more fulfilling role.

1. Keep an open mind
2. Let your value guild your search
3. Trust yourself
4. Overcome the uncertainty
5. Take advantage of shadow opportunities in the new role
6. Visit a career resource center

Good luck on your journey.

Hi Shiying,

It is absolutely okay to be confused and wanting to change career paths after a certain point of time.
Always follow your instinct. Explore your skillsets.
Think about why do you want to change.
Change doesn't happen all of a sudden..you need to analyse, research and work for it.
Stay where you are currently but put in all your hard work and efforts in finding out your interest (if not known yet) or do something practical about your interest.
Once you start working towards your interests, you will automatically feel many opportunities opening up and clearing the path for you.

I am a software engineer right now and wanted to change my career path an year ago, but had the same question as you have.. So, I started analysing my skill set and started exploring different topics. First, I was interested in web accessibility then visual design >ux design>Human computer interaction.

It took me a long time (I had to manage job and then dedicate extra time) to understand each aspect and find my inclination. I have done my research, learnt the subject through various courses and also tried practical projects. Now I am sure of the change and have a steady background for it.

You'll get many useful sources from the internet if you start exploring.
Don't worry, just do what your conscience says and you will definitely be happy:)

Glad to help!

Regards,
Nivedita

Talk to peers or mentors (in the field, in the new field, or someone you respect) to hear you out and share their thoughts. Change is good and don't think that you are giving up if you have thought it through. You can use your gut reaction if you have talked it through with a number of people and have a full picture.

Jesse W.’s Answer

There was a time when people started a career and retired from that career 40 years later. This is no longer true. Many people have multiple career changes. The key things to remember are:
+ Understand why you want to make a change
+ Gather evidence of your successes
+ Explore what makes you successful
+ You learned skills. These skills take a new form in a new carrer, but they are not lost. Build on them.
