Hello Richard,

There are plenty of advantages to having a linkedin account as a high school student. Here is how it can help:

1. Networking - Find people who share similar professional interest and also helpful for people to find you
2. Showcase talents and achievements - No achievement is small. Starting early will help you define a very well rounded digital presence professionally.
3. College application - Your college application will definitely look better with a linkedin URL :)
4. Industry news - Definitely better than reading through articles online and newspapers to get latest news and knowledge about your field/ industry of interest

Lastly, I would think of linkedin as an online portfolio for your career and scholastic activities\.

Hope this helps!

I agree with Roberto's answer. LinkedIn is a website for promoting your career, both your job and interests. You can read about companies and find information videas. In particular you can look at people's career profiles and learn what experiences led them to their current positions. Very useful for managing your own career path!

The challenge is that often you have to have a LI connection to people in order to read their profiles (unless they are allowing open access to their profiles). That can be frustrating. So target your connection requests carefully. The general guide is to send a connection requests with a note commenting on something interesting in the person's LinkedIn profile. Like 'I liked your post on [insert topic]' then add why you liked it'. Indicate that you are interested in them. People put interesting pictures as their headline backgrounds. Talk about that! You are making a connection! End by politely asking if you can join their network.

Doing this make you more memborable, and is very good ettiquette practice for when you find someone you really want to connect with on LI or elsewhere.

Kara’s Answer

LinkedIn is the largest social networking platform for professionals. I teach a sport communications and public relations course taken primarily by university sophomores and juniors during which we discuss the benefits of the platform. Every student in my class is asked to develop a LinkedIn profile as a tool for personal branding. An online page becomes a great place to feature academic achievements, internship highlights, top skills, and volunteer activities!

Creating a LinkedIn profile is a great way to connect with others in your future field of study or work, and it’s also a great link to have pop up when someone Googles you. As the minimum age requirement to use LinkedIn is 13 or 14, virtually any high school student can use it.

LinkedIn is like a Facebook for employers/Job seekers to connect and be in touch with.

These are some of the benefits with having LinkedIn profile:

To get recommendations and endorsements.
To boost your college application.
To impress potential employers
To search for connections to the jobs you want
To show that you’re serious.
Showcase for our learnings/skills.
Networking with others students/employers/job seekers/working professionals.

LinkedIn also offers lot of free and paid trainings to learn or develop soft skills/skills needed for job or profession.

It's not Mandatory, but these are some benefits which is worth considering.

Roberto’s Answer

I'll rather ask "Why not?"

LinkedIn is a social networking site for professionals and career advancement in general. Think of it as a "serious Facebook" for serious purposes only. It is never too early to start. Those profiles are supposed to follow you for life, so be careful and follow the guidelines and etiquette of the site. On the other hand there are discussions and plenty to explore as you start designing your professional life. Maybe you'll do an internship and post it to your resume, or find the opportunity for one ? Learn how real resumes look like? Stay in touch with news of whatever field interest you? Follow your favorite business and professional role models? Maybe connect with what will be a life long mentor?

It is all upside, use it wisely LOL

Good Luck !
