The world of fashion design entails many facets and factors. You are in San Francisco which is a great thing because The Academy of Art University is there. I would suggest starting with formal training and obtaining a degree there.

Some needed helpful skills that you may already have include being a self-starter, the ability to gear your interest to sewing, marketing, presentation skills, sketching, business realtions and more that comes up in this fast paced, deadline filled, competitive career. University training will not only enhance your focus, but also bring you in contact with other designers, markets and great advice from the professors and counselors. You will be in contact with like-minded people who understand the process.

If you already know how to construct a garment - that's a step in the right direction. Build a website of your styles, have friends model them and always have something to show. You can catalog your fashions on a website or you can use a Trend Me account to show your creations and style creativity by making fashion editorials there. That way, you will have an easy way to show people your work.

There will be a lot to learn and the good thing is that, once you get started, the work itself is self-directed. You need tenacious drive, confidence and a special unique creativity - something in your styles that makes you stand out from the rest. People in the industry are always looking for something different. Something they haven't seen before. Getting to know people in the business is crucial. People need to know your name and your work. Expect to work long hours, also. It's a very time consuming field of work.

I do recommend going the academic route for this career for many reasons, especially if you have a serious interest pointing to a career. You need exposure and the opportunity to learn detail about every aspect of the business. You need a circle of professionals around you. So visit the Academy of Art University . There is also The Art Institute of California in your city and other schools.

I have answered this assuming that you will be able to attend formal training. If not, let me know and I will give advice on how to do it on your own if that is the circumstance. Best wishes to you in all you do, Erik.

Michelle recommends the following next steps:

Build a personal website of your styles
Use Trend Me to showcase your styles as a catalog or portfolio www.trendme.net
Vist the Academy of Art University, The Art Institute of California and other schools and ask a lot of questions

It is truly hard to design your clothes but for me, it is not that hard as I believe that I can style my outfits with the help of patches, which makes my outfit look more stylish in my budget and one of them was personalized iron on patches, which I used in my recent outfits.

Lots of ways to become a designer...learn to sew, learn to draw, work in a retail store, research clothing design (e.g., magazines, online, stores), go to school for formal training (i.e., community college, college/university, technical school, etc.), intern (if possible), talk to people in the industry (if possible).

If possible, start designing and creating your clothes...wear them, have friends/relatives wear them, sell them at local stores.

Bottom line...there isn't only one way/path to become a designer. If you have the desire, talent, drive...you can make your way.

Good luck!
