Michele’s Answer

Hi Ivan! Some universities require you to apply to specific programs. In those instances you'll need to work with your advisor to apply to the program you want to pursue. As Patrick mentioned in his reply, this may mean taking additional courses which would extend the duration of your studies and push your graduation date out. So you'll need to take this into account when determining the cost of switching your major.

Other universities have less restrictions on switching majors. In that case you'd still work with your advisor to change majors. The rest remains true, there will likely be a cost to switching.

If you can afford the financial implications of extending your studies and you are confident in changing course in your academic pursuits go for it! A semester or two may seem like a long time to delay graduation, but in the long run it won't matter. If you can align your studies to your personal interests and find something that is more fulfilling that your current program then make the switch, you will not regret it!

Michele recommends the following next steps:

Speak to your academic advisor to understand the impact of switching majors
Determine if you can afford to extend your studies

Yes, but many of the graduation requirements may be different that require you to take additional courses that can likely extend the time it takes you to graduate.

Jeff’s Answer

You can most definitely switch. Best to do it before too long though, since switching later could lead to more time in school and more expenses

Joseph’s Answer

Of course, I switched classes and electives until I found the one that interested me the most. Sometimes your first choice may not be your last choice just make sure you are enjoying the major and study. That is what is important.

Zach’s Answer

Yeah! You can totally switch majors. Part of the beauty of university is that it gives you the chance to explore your interests, especially if you are at a liberal arts school. It does sometimes depend on your school because different schools will have different strictness about certain majors/programs. I would meet with your advisor or academic dean and discuss with them about your specific school.
