Do I need a degree or is there a different way?

Do I need a degree to achieve my goal of becoming a zookeeper? If I don’t what other path options are there? And If I don’t get a degree does that not make me as competitive in the future when looking for a job?

Hi Alycia,

Typically, zoos now ask for at least a certification (such as a veterinary technician certification) before you can get hired on as a zookeeper. Some require a Bachelors degree, but not all of them. If you have a history of working with animals like at a vet, on a farm, or at an animal rehab center, you may be able to get a zookeeper postion through experience, which was how the job used to be filled before college degrees became more of a requirement.

My daughter-in-law’s sister is a zookeeper in St. Louis Missouri. And yes, she had to have a degree.

Hey there! Becoming a zookeeper can be a bit competitive, so having a certification is definitely a good idea to stand out among other candidates. However, if you're not too keen on obtaining a degree, why not consider becoming a veterinary assistant? This role doesn't require any specific certification, although there are available courses if you want to learn more.

Plus, some zoos might still welcome you with open arms if you have relevant experience and a great attitude towards learning and growth! So, even without a degree, you could find yourself working alongside adorable animals at the zoo. Good luck! 😊

Hey Alycia! 😊 A degree can be super useful and sometimes even necessary for certain careers, but it really boils down to what you want to do in life. Apart from 4-year degrees, there are other awesome options like 2-year associate's degrees, trade schools, joining the military, or diving straight into work while learning through internships and on-the-job experiences. Ever thought about assistantship positions or work-study programs where you work and learn at the same time? Some fields even offer all the knowledge you need right at work, like enlisting in the military. So don't worry, there's no "one size fits all" approach, and there's definitely a path that's perfect for you! Hope this helps you out! 🌟

Hi- Most zoos are requiring a degree to be a zookeeper. However, I know that a 4-year degree at a university or College can be costly and overwhelming. There are 2-year zoo keeping associate degrees that are great for students that don't want to spend 4 years in college. Two great programs are Moore Park College in California and Santa Fe College in Florida. Students that graduate from these programs are highly sought after as zookeepers. Hope this helps. Good luck.
