Sherie’s Answer

Good day Paislie;

I know looking for legitimate websites for acting can be hard. My husband is a professional actor and provided the below 3 websites for you to set up accounts on to submit for roles. Some of the sites you have to pay for an account, but it is a REAL site with real roles to submit for. You don't have to be SAG/AFTRA on these sights, however some of the union jobs you may not be eligible to submit for, but there are many you can. The sites are; GOOD LUCK :)

1. Backstage - www.backstage.com
2. Actor's Access - www.actorsaccess.com
3. Casting network - www.castingnetworks.com

Since you have explored on line agencies already, I would suggest taking the alternate route by exploring in person. You would know better than I do about local theatres and acting companies, but I would suggest that you visit your City Hall at 704 E. Main Street in Petersburg. Visiting in person will make it more tangible for you and I suggest City Hall because usually it is a hub of information about businesses. Find out if there is a Chamber of Commerce there, also. Ask about where the theatres are and get contact information. In the meantime, audition for everything you see and hear about in order to build your resume.

Visit your local college and talk to someone in the theatre department.

Being prepared as an actor is one of the foremost basic things you'll need to do in order to be considered for acting work. That means practicing your acting skills (reading out loud, reading about, observing) every day. You will also need photos, a resume and experience. Keep in mind that actors do not "get" acting work, rather acting work is given to them.

You can provide yourself with your own opportunity. Many people are creating their own shows that they create themselves. They have a show. Many people are on You Tube and other platforms with daily or weekly shows that they produce themselves. Decide on the type and format and content of what you may want to do and provide your own opportunity for yourself.

Once you begin meeting fellow actors, directors and any other theatre professionals or students, they will share a lot of information with you about what is auditioning currently. Just remember, nothing with acting is guarenteed. You audition and if the auditor thinks your a good fit, than you are chosen for a role. Consider each audition practice.

I understand your concern as it is sometimes difficult in a town other than L.A. or N.Y.C. but I believe you will start at the beginning and find yourself progressing as you go along. Best wishes with your progress in one of the most fun, creative and character building careers there is !
