Artificial intelligence is a field with springs and winters. Currently we are in an AI spring which means a lot of advancement comes at us very quickly. Based on previous trends there will come an AI winter. Advancements slow down or halt and there isn't as much talk about it. This cycle has already happened a number of times. It can be considered a current trend. Even if interest decreases, research is still going to be done, just maybe at a slower pace.

Automation used to be in the same boat as AI as it was pushed heavily for a long time. (it still is pushed in many manufacturing industries today). AI seems to have a similar path as it is being pushed heavily in industry today and will find its place to be used as a tool in our everyday lives, just like automation has (think of automatic cars, dish washers, dryers!) Although it seems like AI is just a fad, focusing our efforts on one new tool can really push the envelope for this tool and will allow us to become more efficient and possibly make our day to day lives esier. AI is definitely not a trend. In fact that term was coined all the way back in 1955 so AI has been around in some form for a while. There are a lot of different forms of AI that we all interact with and have become very familiar with for a long time (e.g. Netflix recommendations, Google Maps routes, adaptive cruise control, etc.). This current form of Generative AI is a more recent breakthrough (though this work has been in progress for years) while it's still in the early stages, it further cements the fact that AI is here to stay will continue to become a bigger part in all of our lives.

What has changed and continues to change are the underlying technologies that have allowed its development to ramp up exponentially. Expect this growth to continue on a steep curve. All SW and most products will end up with some level of AI in them, so spending time in this space and learning the fundamentals will not be wasted effort. Before we unleash the power of AI we have to try and look at what we want AI to do and what role we want it to play in our lives.

Often we have let the technology roll out and we have looked to change our behaviours or the technology after a period of time monitoring it's impact on ourselves.

With AI we are aware that the scope for the impact to be extremely pervasive in our lives and cover so many different areas it is getting a lot of coverage which makes it seem like a little more like a trend.

So many organisations are looking to implement frameworks and protocols around usage so as to help people feel more comfortable about AI and how it may help them rather than having negative impacts.
