Hi Anthony,
Great question. I'd suggest first finding where the nearest fire department to you is. You can use the internet or ask a teacher for help. Make sure you get the fire department's email address.

Then ask a teacher or an adult to help you contact them to learn more. Fire departments can be really busy, so don't call them directly unless they provide a non-emergency line. The best option is write them an email with any questions you have. Ask a teacher for help!

Good luck!

Kenneth’s Answer

I am a former firefighter. Stations vary in call volume so there are a few ways to accomplish being around the service and seeing what firefighters do. Given the nature of emergency response it is not allowed, there may be exceptions, but I've never heard of any, for anyone under the age of 21 to respond to call or even ride along. This is due to insurance issues with having underaged civilian in the trucks if something bad happened. Do not let that discourage you though. Many stations have cadet programs for teens to help give them a boost in trying to become a firefighter. My cadets would get specialized training on firefighter I skills that prepared them for when they turned 21 and offered positions into the department and/or prepared them for the academy. Contacting a station's non-emergency line to ask questions is highly advised. We used to show people the station all the time and it was a good opportunity for us to promote the cadet program.
