Hi, Ava. I take it you are referring to your essay for college admission. You should start by deciding what skills, accomplishments, experiences and personality traits you want to come across. I would suggest starting the essay with something that will capture the attention of the reader, something personal, thoughtful or provocative. (In other words, forget what you learned in high school English classes about repeating or rephrasing the question.) Don't try to cover everything, narrow down your focal points to the few most important ones. Avoid clichés and repetition. Consciously remember that you are not texting and are not to fall back on any of the bad writing habits (carelessness, abbreviations, slang, lack of punctuation, etc.) that texting instills. Don't rely on spell check; read over your work for writing errors and poor organization three times and then have someone else do it. If anything requires researching, don't guess, research it and from a reliable source. In the content and in the presentation you're selling yourself, and you should do so with insightfulness, humility, style and maybe a little humor. You're also answering their question of why they would want you as part of their community. What about college, or their college, are you interested in, how might you involve yourself in the life of the college, and what would you bring that's valuable and unique? If possible, try to enjoy writing it, as that will make it more likely that the reader will enjoy it, too.
