What types of fields do Mechanical Engineers work in?

I have heard that Mechanical Engineering is one of the largest engineering fields. I know that there are a ton of opportunities in the mechanical engineering field, but I would like to know more about the different possibilities in the field. #mechanical-engineering #engineering

Cheryl’s Answer

Hi Britney, Cheryl again here... yes Mechanical Engineering has a lot of possibilities. I work at the US EPA and have for nearly all of my working career. At the EPA we work on a variety of subjects and there is little management so everyone has a lot of responsibility. I work on technical analysis for regulations and I find different technologies that can help auto manufacturers reduce emissions in their products. From the vehicle side there are mechanical engineers who work in the aerodynamics field - (that may be more of an aerodynamic engineering as well) - where they work on computational fluid dynamics and model cars in the computer and see what types of styles or add on devices will help the vehicle achieve a more slippery profile as it is driving down the road. Other engineers work on engines where they see if they can tune or design their engine for the lowest emissions and best power/acceleration. There are engineers who work on transmissions such as CVT or Automatic or SCV designs. There are engineers who work on crash safety and model vehicles in Computer Aided Design and see how their vehicles crash, given material properties of a car's structure, under certain NHTSA regulatory crash requirements. MADYMO is a program used to evaluate what happens to passengers inside the vehicle structure - work with airbags and restraint systems. There are mechanical engineers who work in the field of materials and lightweight materials and forming of aluminum, steel, magnesium, composite fiber, etc. There is really so much a mechanical engineer can do. And it is good for a mechanical engineer to know a little about electrical engineering and computer programming as well. A Master's Degree is good to have or a MBA. Engineers can move up the chain into management - project management or management of other people. I hope this is helpful.

William’s Answer

Hi Britney! I'm a mechanical engineer, and now, I work for a management consulting firm. My target industries are aerospace and advanced manufacturing. From this, I'm able to leverage my technical background in solving complex problems. The sky is the limit. As a mechanical engineer, you're learning how to solve problems.

You can leverage that ability in almost any field or industry.

Hope that helps!

Farzan’s Answer

Mechanical engineering is very diverse and can expand from design of any ubiquitous appliance and machines to overlapping with other disciplines like electrical engineering (for example controls engineering), medical science (for example biomechanics) etc. Once you start the studies you will be exposed to general and fundamentals of design and analyses which can be applied to very many fields and you don’t know until later on of which area of engineering with mechanical you’d be most interested to pursue.
